November 13, 2018 - An ocean sunfish (Mola mola) has recently been added to the Open Sea exhibit. A sunfish can dive to depths of 1,800 feet, or it might be seen laying flat on the ocean's surface, sunbathing. Scientists theorize this helps warm up its body after deep dives. The largest species of bony fish in the world, a sunfish can reach a staggering weight of 5,000 pounds and a total length of nearly nine feet. This one joins the exhibit at about two and a half feet long and 66 pounds.
